  2. At least 4 model entries in CR's 1992 Reliability Tables for the 5-to-6-year age range.

These 8 brand leaders of the automobile industry are listed below in descending order of entries in CR's 1992 Reliability Tables (covering the age range of 5-to-6 years old), together with entry count.

  • The Toyota line, with 13 Reliability Table entries
  • The Nissan line, with 12 Reliability Table entries
  • The Chrysler line, with 6 Reliability Table entries
  • The Honda line, with 5 Reliability Table entries
  • The Mazda line, with 5 Reliability Table entries
  • The Mercedes-Benz line, with 4 Reliability Table entries
  • The Volkswagen line, with 4 Reliability Table entries
  • The Volvo line, with 4 Reliability Table entries

The Toyota line is first by this measure of quality for model years: 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006.

The Mercedes-Benz and Volvo lines occasionally make the best list, as well as the worst list; the Honda and Mazda lines make it more often. The Toyota line makes the best list for all model years since 1985, the only line to do so.

Computations

To determine the number of each brand's 1986 models in the age range of 5-to-6 years old on Consumer Reports' list of Used Cars to Avoid, a count is made of each brand's 1986 models on this list in the April 1992 issue of Consumer Reports (page 283). If an entry of the list contains cylinder counts, engine sizes, engine types, or body styles separated by a comma, a dash, or the conjunction and, the entry is doubled for the count.
 
To determine the number of each brand's 1986 models in the age range of 5-to-6 years old in Consumer Reports' list of Reliability Tables, a count is made of each brand's 1986 models in the Reliability Tables of the April 1992 issue of Consumer Reports (pages 252-268).
