The following bar graph depicts each car company's share of the 2002 Used Cars to Avoid in 2008 at an approximate age of 5 ½ years.

This is a bar graph of car maker shares of the worst cars of 2002 by CR’s 2008 list of 2002 Used Cars to Avoid. Chart by James Benjamin Bleeker, 01 March 2012.

2002's Worst Car Manufacturers by Number of Manufacturer's 2002 Cars to Avoid Divided by All of Its 2002 Cars Rated in 2008

For this quality measure, we divide the car maker's number of 2002 models on CR's 2008 list of Used Cars to Avoid by the number of its 2002 models rated in CR's 2008 Reliability Tables. This computation is done with the intent to garner a rough estimate as to how likely a brand's models will be among the Cars to Avoid at about 5 ½ years.

The 10 worst 2002 car manufacturers by this quality measure are, in descending order (worst first):

  • Isuzu Motors Ltd, with a dividend-divisor ratio of 1/0
  • Volkswagen AG, with a quotient value of 1.50 based on 6 rated models
  • General Motors Corporation, with a quotient value of 1.19 based on 27 rated models
  • Chrysler Group, with a quotient value of 1.07 based on 15 rated models
  • Saab (then part of General Motors Corporation), with a quotient value of 1.00 based on 2 rated models
  • Jaguar (then part of Ford Motor Company), with a quotient value of 1.00 based on 1 rated model
  • Kia Motors Corporation, with a quotient value of 1.00 based on 1 rated model
  • Mercedes-Benz, with a quotient value of 0.60 based on 5 rated models
  • BMW AG, with a quotient value of 0.60 based on 5 rated models
  • Hyundai Motor Company, with a quotient value of 0.33 based on 6 rated models
Worthy of note is that although Toyota Motor Corporation and General Motors Corporation have a similar number of 2002 models rated in CR's April 2008 reliability tables (23 and 27, respectively), General Motors has many among the 2002 Cars to Avoid, but Toyota has none.

All of the car company quotients for model year 2002 are depicted in the following bar graph.

This s a bar graph of 2002’s worst car makers by dividing the number of the manufacturer’s 2002 Cars to Avoid in 2008 by all of its 2002 rated cars in Consumer Reports’ 2008 Reliability Tables. Chart by James Benjamin Bleeker, 14 March 2012.

From the chart, we see that Ford Motor Company's fraction of worst is small compared to General Motors', but General Motors' and Chrysler's are very similar.

Honda Motor Company made 2002's list of worst companies due to its marketing of the Passport, a rebadged sport-utility vehicle by Isuzu Motors Ltd, then an affiliate of General Motors Corporation.
