The following bar graph depicts each car company's share of the 1986 Used Cars to Avoid in 1992 at an approximate age of 5 ½ years.

This is a bar graph of car maker shares of the worst cars of 1986 by CR’s 1992 list of 1986 Used Cars to Avoid. Chart by James Benjamin Bleeker, 20 March 2012.

In 1986 the Detroit 3 - General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler - very solidly dominate the Cars to Avoid.

1986's Worst Car Manufacturers by Number of Manufacturer's 1986 Cars to Avoid Divided by All of Its 1986 Cars Rated in 1992

For this quality measure, we divide the car maker's number of 1986 models on CR's 1992 list of Used Cars to Avoid by the number of its 1986 models rated in Consumer Reports' April 1992 Reliability Tables. This computation is done with the intent to garner a rough estimate as to how likely a brand's models will be among the Cars to Avoid at about 5 ½ years.

The 7 worst 1986 car manufacturers by this quality measure are, in descending order (worst first):

  • American Motors Corporation, with a quotient value of 1.00 based on 2 rated models
  • Hyundai Motor Company, with a quotient value of 1.00 based on 1 rated model
  • Jaguar, with a quotient value of 1.00 based on 1 rated model
  • Ford Motor Company, with a quotient value of 0.55 based on 29 rated models
  • General Motors Corporation, with a quotient value of 0.53 based on 58 rated models
  • Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd (Subaru), with a quotient value of 0.40 based on 5 rated models
  • Chrysler Corporation, with a quotient value of 0.38 based on 26 rated models
All of the car company quotients that are greater than 0 for model year 1986 are depicted in the following bar graph.

This s a bar graph of 1986’s worst car makers by dividing the number of the manufacturer’s 1986 Cars to Avoid in 1992 by all of its 1986 rated cars in Consumer Reports’ April 1992 Reliability Tables. Chart by James Benjamin Bleeker, 20 March 2012.

Worthy of note is that Hyundai Motor Company went from one of the worst (second worst by this measure of reliability-durability) in 1987 to one of 2006's 3 best manufacturers.

American Motors Corporation was absorbed by Chrysler Corporation in 1987, and Chrysler took a trip through bankruptcy in 2009 that was similar to that taken by General Motors. U.S.-government financing provided the means by which a "new" Chrysler and GM emerged with much of their old manufacturing facilities and most of their former employees and gave them at least a temporary respite from the effects of the decades-long consumer shift toward quality.  As of the spring 2012, both are still car manufacturers.

The Nova, a rebadged Corolla, is not included in the above computations.

Note: A comma or dash between cylinder counts, engine sizes, or drivelines doubles entry count in Cars to Avoid.
